This is not your kid's school math class. Math. Puzzles. Stories. Crafts. FUN! In these week-long, loosely structured summer sessions, learners ages 7-11 and 12-15 will come together to explore the intersections of mathematics, logic puzzles, games, storytelling, and creativity, purely for the joy of it!
Less academic instruction, more connecting around shared kiddo interests and growth mindset, Summer Curiosity Club will take place indoors and outside on the patio at High Five Books, with lots of reading, games, and choice time built in. Participants can expect to play around with open-ended explorations that are accessible and intriguing, as well as diving into stories that highlight Big Feelings that come along with persevering through valuable challenges.
Experienced educator Coach Emma Martin will facilitate these four-hour daily sessions, specifically geared toward gender minorities: tweens and teens who identify as female, trans, and/or nonbinary, for whom research shows benefit from environments that cultivate a love of exploration in a non-competitive, playful, and affirming community.
INSTRUCTOR BIO
Emma Martin (she/they) is a local educator of nine years and avid reader of the High Five Books collection! She has taught mathematics in private, charter, and public settings. They became passionate about teaching mathematics identity after realizing that math confidence deters historically-marginalized populations from pursuing STEM careers. Emma believes we must teach in the way we need young people to think, not as cogs in a system, but as empaths, innovators, and collaborative problem-solvers.
